INTRODUCTION

Tyres from motor vehicles are one of the largest sources of waste rubber. Tyres vary considerably in type of construction, materials employed & total weight. Table below shows the average composition of new tyres for cars & trucks, which comprise of 90% of the total tyre market.

These waste tyres can be recycled with the latest air turbine refrigeration technology, which is highly cost-effective when compared to cryo-grinding. Scrap tyres are split into the following products in the process of manufacture-

The technology is from China. Standard plant capacities are 10,000 tons, 20,000 tons and 30,000 tons per year.

1. Crumb rubber of 10 - 200 mesh, which is mainly used for mixing with Bitumen to the extent of 10 12% to make rubberized roads, which have better resistance to cracking and creeping. Other uses of crumb rubber includes tyre re-treading, sports tracks, carpet backing and rubber mats. They are sold @ Rs. 12-20 per kg.

2.  Steel cords, which are used for making springs for mattresses or sold as scrap. The present market price is Rs. 10 12 per kg.

3.  Nylon cords, which are used in non-woven geo-textiles, mainly in TV and Computer areas. New applications are to make nylon filament
